The effect of culture on caregiving for people with dementia
Work systems model provides lessons through a human factors lens
By Laura C. Tovar Felix and Arunkumar Pennathur
Informal caregiving, especially for people with
dementia, is considered unpaid work. These caregivers
face difficulties because of the progressive nature of
dementia, and the emotional and physical demands
of caregiving, coupled with the lack of adequate
resources and support systems. As dementia
progresses, caregivers experience heightened levels of
stress and burden, particularly when they are responsible
for managing complex behavioral and psychological
symptoms associated with the condition.
