A Free Student Chapter Leadership Seminar for Current and Incoming Chapter Officers

About the Seminar

This free seminar is designed to give current and incoming student chapter officers and committee chairs the leadership skills they need to more effectively lead their chapters.

The seminar is offered by IISE and led by Timothy J. Greene, Ph.D.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this seminar, you will:

  • Be more aware of the type of leader you want to be — and can be
  • Feel more confident that your leadership actions will result in your chapter accomplishing its goals
  • Better understand what it takes to be an effective student chapter leader
  • Be better equipped to plan, organize, and communicate in whatever leadership position you hold

Curriculum

Module 1: Developing You as a Leader

  • Overview of leadership
  • The context of a leader
  • Understanding your characteristics as a leader
  • The knowledge you need to lead
  • Your leadership values
  • Your leadership style

Module 2: Effective Leadership

  • Chapter Planning — developing a plan everyone wants to follow and can follow
  • Chapter Communication — what information to communicate, with whom, when, and how
  • Leading Other Student Volunteers — common failures in assigning work, setting expectations, motivating volunteers, and understanding why some volunteers don't take responsibility

Module 3: Chapter Operations

  • The history and functions of IISE
  • Student chapter operations
  • Student chapter seminars you can offer
  • Regional Conferences you can attend or host
  • IISE volunteer opportunities available to you as a graduate, including professional chapters and the Annual Conference

Format

The seminar combines two live, virtual evenings of presentations and discussion with six hours of asynchronous content you can complete on your own schedule.

Live sessions are planned for early fall semester — September or October 2026.
