Former SHS president Vinod Sahney awarded 2010 Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Award

The Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Award is the highest lifetime achievement honor awarded by IIE. Vin has a Doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a master's degree from Purdue, and a bachelor's degree from the Birla Institute of Technology in Ranchi, India. After graduating from Purdue and Wisconsin, Vin worked for several years at Wayne State University as a tenured IE faculty focusing on healthcare systems. He then joined Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich., where he worked for 25 years ultimately achieving the role of senior vice president. His responsibilities included strategic planning, marketing, public relations, governmental relations, management services, quality, Center for Health Services research, and Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. Vin played an important role in launching management engineering services at Henry Ford where his legacy continues today. His last major assignment at Henry Ford was as the Chief Project Officer of a 300-bed hospital and ambulatory clinic. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard University's School of Public Health. He has also taught in the executive programs in health policy and management at Harvard University, Case Western Reserve University, the University of Michigan, and the Stockholm Institute of Economics in Sweden. Vin helped establish and grow the Society for Health Systems as past president, HMSS (now HiMSS), the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (founding board chair and continuing board member), and the Journal of the Society for Health Systems (editor). He is one of roughly 25 elected members of both the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering. He is a fellow of both the Health Care Information and Management Systems Society and IIE. Vin has published more than 50 articles in peer review journals and authored two books and 10 chapters in books on health care administration. In 2006, he moved to Boston as senior vice president and chief strategy officer for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
