Office & Institutional Furniture Seating Standards

Presenters: Teresa A. Bellingar, Ph.D., CPE, senior corporate ergonomist, Haworth, Inc. and Randy Ruster, senior manager of product codes & standards, Herman Miller Inc.

The presenters will explain and clarify the array of seating standards and requirements for the office and institutional furniture industry. Attendees will learn about the various market segments and standards that pertain to each. These include American National Standards (ANSI) for: general-purpose office chairs, lounge and public seating, educational seating, and the new seating standard for large and heavy individuals.

Additionally, the presenters will touch on how the growing need for healthcare seating as well discuss how anthropometric data is used in the development of seating standards and BIFMA G1-2013: ergonomics guideline for furniture used in office work spaces designed for computer use. Some insight into future sizing recommendations for seating designed for larger individuals will also be provided.
