NIOSH Lifting Equation

Presenter: Jack Lu, researcher, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

Dr. Thomas Waters was a major contributor to the field of occupational ergonomics. He was the primary developer of the NIOSH lifting equation, which has been widely used by numerous field safety professionals. His influential research on assessing the risk of manual lifting using the NIOSH lifting equation is internationally recognized. The broad impact of his research on manual material handling stretched across many industries and is particularly relevant to manufacturing, warehousing, healthcare and agriculture.

In memory of Dr. Waters, this presentation will demonstrate the impact of Dr. Waters' research on three specific areas: the NIOSH lifting equation, healthcare ergonomics and child ergonomics in agriculture.
