NEGATIVE TRANSFER. A mental process occurring when past learning interferes with new learning. This can occur when the stimuli in the new situation are similar to the stimuli in the old situation, but different responses are required. It can also occur when the stimuli in a new situation are different from the stimuli in the old situation, but the responses are the same.

NEUROMUSCULAR. Pertaining jointly to nerves and muscles, as neuromuscular junction.

NIGHT VISION. Vision which occurs in faint light, or after dark adaptation. Sometimes called twilight or scotopic vision. Hues and saturations cannot be distinguished.

NOISE. (1) Unwanted signal(s) that typically interfere with wanted signals. Noise may be audible (voice communications), or visible (radar, hard copy). (2) Unwanted energy (or the voltage produced), usually of random character, present in a transmission system due to any cause.

NOISE CRITERION (NC) CURVES. Any of several versions (SC, NC, NCA, PNC) of criteria used for rating the acceptability of continuous indoor noise.

NUMERICAL DISPLAY. Format of information display containing only numerical data.

NYSTAGMUS. An involuntary oscillation of the eyeballs, especially occurring as a result of eye fixations and stimulations of the inner ear during rotation of the body.
