WALKIE STACKER. A power operated stacker (controlled by an operator walking behind it) that allows a pallet to be lifted, stacked and transported.

WALKING BEAM CONVEYOR. A conveyor employing a multiple arrangement of walking beams with associated rails and/or rollers.

WALL CRANE. A traveling crane having a jib with a movable or fixed hoisting mechanism and operating on a runway attached to the side walls or columns of a building.

WALL TIE. A member connecting the rack to a wall.

WAND SCANNER. A hand held scanning device used as a contact bar code or OCR reader.

WAREHOUSE. A building where wares, and/or goods, are received, stored, and shipped.

WAREHOUSE LAYOUT. Layout of the AS/RS, storage racks, and other support services in a warehouse.

WATER MUFFLER. A special muffler utilizing a water trap to prevent the emission of sparks or flames from the exhaust system.

WAVE PICKING. An order picking method in which a designated group (wave) of orders are fragmented into multiple pickstations and picked simultaneously. Typically the fragments of orders are consolidated into single entities prior to shipping.

WAYBILL. A document prepared by the transportation line at the point of origin giving a description of the shipment and shipping instructions and sent with the shipment or mailed to the agent at the waybill destination or transfer point.

WHEEL BASE. Distance from center to center of outermost wheels.

WHEEL CONVEYOR. A series of wheels supported on axles in a frame over which objects are moved manually or by gravity. (See SKATE-WHEEL CONVEYOR.)

WHEEL, DRIVING. Wheel to which tractive effort is applied to cause equipment to move.

WHEEL LOAD. The load on any wheel with the trolley and lifted load (rated capacity) positioned on the bridge to give maximum loading.

WHEEL SPIRAL. Helically wound, curved sections of wheel conveyor that lower objects by gravity.

WICKET CONVEYOR. A conveyor comprised of two or more endless chains connected by cross bars to which vertical rods are attached at spaced intervals. The cross bars are also provided with spaced projections at level of same to form, in effect, a continuous carrying surface through which the loads cannot fall. Used for handling such products as painted sheets, wall, or composition board, etc., on edge through dryers or bake ovens.
