Bibliography
MACHINE LAYOUT. Detailed positions of machines, workstations, and support services in a factory.
MAGAZINE. A type of warehouse usually covered with earth or depressed, where ammunition or other hazardous material is stored.
MAGNETIC CONTROLLER. A device or system of devices having all basic functions operated by electromagnets.
MAIN AISLE. An aisle wide enough to permit the easy flow of people, material, firefighting apparatus and/or equipment in two directions, generally running the length of the facility.
MAIN FLOOR. The floor of a story in which the principal entrance of a building is located.
MANIFEST. A document giving the description of aircraft, car, ship, or truck cargo.
MANLIFT. A passenger conveyor consisting of a vertical, endless belt with projecting steps and handles on its outer surface for transporting passengers between different elevations.
MAN-ON-BOARD. A storage and retrieval concept whereby materials are accessed by taking the operator to the materials on board an S/R machine.
MARINE ACCIDENT. Any grounding, fire, explosion, or other accident involving a vessel while afloat.
MARINE LEG. A self-feeding bucket elevator with a means for lowering into the hold of a vessel. (See BUCKET ELEVATOR.)
MARK SENSING. Machine reading of marks by use or the conductive properties of the marks themselves.
MASS PRODUCTION. A manufacturing operation in which a few high volume products are handled.
MAST. The support member providing the guideways permitting vertical movement of the carriage. It is usually constructed in the form of channels or similar sections providing the supporting pathway for the carriage.
MASTER SWITCH (CRANE). A manually operated device which dominates the operation of contactors and auxiliary devices of an electric circuit.
MAST VERTICAL (FORK TRUCK WITH TILTING MAST). Mast is considered vertical at any given fork height when adjusted so that the intersection of load-carrying surfaces and forward faces of forks or their equivalent is the same horizontal distance from the load axle as it is when at the height of the mast pivot.
MATERIAL FLOW NETWORK. The set of paths used by material handling devices for transporting material in a factory.
MATERIAL HANDLING ASSIGNMENT. The act of assigning a specific material handling device to a specific material transfer request.
MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEM SELECTION. The act of selecting the types and quantity of one or more types of material handling devices from a candidate list to handle all the material transfers in a factory for a specified time period, usually a few years.
MATERIALS HANDLING EQUIPMENT. Such items as forklift trucks and attachments, towing tractors, automatic guided vehicles, overhead or stacker cranes, robots, pallet trucks, warehouse trailers, and conveyor systems, used in storage and handling operations.
MATTE FEEDER. An extremely heavy duty type of apron feeder consisting of thick steel flights attached to a solid mat of chain links supported, in turn, by closely spaced rollers.
MAXIMUM FORK HEIGHT. The fork height attainable in fully raised position when loaded.
MAXIMUM LIFT. The lift from the extreme lowered position of the lifting device to the fully elevated position when loaded.
MEASUREMENT CARGO. A cargo on which transportation charges are based on measurement of dimensions.
MECHANICAL LOAD BRAKE. An automatic type of brake used for controlling loads in the lowering direction when simple reversing control is used. The brake remains released as long as the motor is driving in the down direction but automatically sets to provide braking action when the load begins to overhaul the motor.
MEMORANDUM TARIFF. Nonofficial documents which contain rule and rate information extracted from official tariffs and published by carriers.
MERGING FEEDER. One which consolidates the movement of objects from two or more lanes into a single lane.
MERRY-GO-ROUND CONVEYOR. (See CAROUSEL CONVEYOR.)
METERING CONVEYOR. In package handling, a power conveyor whose speed and motion are controlled to release units at a predetermined rate.
MEZZANINE. A platform within a story between the floor of the story, and the floor or roof next above it; elevated to a height which permits movement of people both below, and on the mezzanine; and generally having an area of not more than 1/3 the area of the floor immediately below the mezzanine.
MHI. The Material Handling Institute of America.
MICRO LOAD AS/RS. A fully enclosed AS/RS with narrow aisles that have just enough room for an S/R machine that can handle very small loads (e.g., electronic components, memory chips, etc).
MINI-LOAD. A storage and retrieval concept whereby materials are accessed by bringing the container to the operator where he/she processes less than unit load quantities. The term is typically used in small parts applications and/or where the weight of the container does not exceed 750 pounds.
MINIMUM PRESSURE ACCUMULATING CONVEYOR. A conveyor designed to minimize buildup of pressure between adjacent packages or cartons.
MINIMUM UNDERCLEARANCE. The vertical dimension from the lowest point on the loaded or empty vehicle, excluding wheel assemblies, to the vehicle supporting plane.
MIXING CONVEYOR, PADDLE TYPE. A conveyor consisting of one or more parallel paddle conveyor screws.
MIXING CONVEYOR, SCREW TYPE. A screw conveyor consisting of one or more conveyor screws, ribbon flight, cut-flight, or cut-and-folded flight conveyor screws with or without auxiliary paddles.
MOBILE RACK. A rack with wheels at the base that permit movement of the entire rack structure along tracks.
MODULAR DRAWER. Drawers with storage compartments that are modular in design and contained in a storage cabinet, providing high density storage.
MONORAIL. An overhead track on which a powered or unpowered carrying device moves equally spaced, top running or underhung carriers.
MOTOR BRAKE. A mechanical device which applies braking action to stop the rotation of the armature.
MOTORIZED HAND/RIDER TRUCK. A dual purpose truck that is designed to be controlled by a walking or a riding operator.
MOTORIZED HAND TRUCK. A truck that is designed to be controlled by a walking operator.
MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT. An accident involving any powered vehicle designed primarily for on-the-road operations. This excludes equipment designed primarily for off-the-road operations such as material handling equipment, amphibious vehicles when afloat, tractors, etc.
MOVING BEAM BAR CODE READER. A device which dynamically searches for a bar code pattern by sweeping a moving optical beam through a field of view.
MULTIPLE FLIGHT CONVEYOR SCREW. A conveyor screw having two or more conveyor screw flights mounted at equal intervals around the pipe or shaft. The axial distance between adjacent flights is equal to the pitch of the conveyor screw flight divided by the number of flights.
MULTIPLE FONT. A scanner having the capability to recognize more than one type font, but only one at a time.
MULTIPLE SCREW FEEDER. A series of conveyor screws installed side by side, usually in a flat bottom bin.
MULTIPLE STRAND CONVEYOR. (1) Any conveyor which employs two or more spaced strands of chain, belts, or cords as the load-supporting medium. (2) Any conveyor in which two or more strands are used as the propelling medium connecting pans, pallets, etc.
MULTI-ROW LAYOUT. A layout of machines, workstations, and support services along two or more well-defined rows.
