Here's your sign?
One thing that continually amazes me is the increasingly flippant attitude we take toward following the rules. Process standardization, let alone excellence, can’t be sustained without consistent adherence to a set of rules, and yet we seem to be drifting farther away from such a goal.

Safeguarding your data

Simulation in healthcare
I had the pleasure of attending December’s Winter Simulation Conference in Washington, D.C. While the healthcare operational model is different in each country, the conference proved the relevance and applicability of simulation in healthcare environments. I was shocked to find that despite the variations in how healthcare systems operate, we all seem to struggle with similar, if not the same, problems.

Nevertheless, with energy costs steadily rising and supplies in some sectors becoming less dependable, that is bound to change.

What are we? Operational engineers
After 27 years as an industrial engineer, I have been disappointed with the fad of the last 10 years that emphasizes Six Sigma, instead of industrial engineering, for operational improvement initiatives. In areas of the business where the need is strictly data- (not process-) based, having only Six Sigma skills works. For operational improvement initiatives, industrial engineering is the preferred set of skills.
