This month we highlight two articles from IISE Transactions. The first article investigates drones and concludes that reliability can be improved significantly if the drone is rebalanced by turning rotors on and off based on its balance status. The authors develop a numerical approach for determining drones' working states, based on which they estimate drones' reliability. The authors further develop computational efficient numerical simulation methods to address drones that use many rotors. The second article studies the porosity inspection in additive manufacturing (AM) by inferring 3-D pore defects (size distribution, volume number density, volume fraction) based on high-resolution microscopic images. The authors establish the relationship between 2-D and 3-D size and number density and then develop a series of statistical approaches to inferring the 3-D porosity based on the observed 2-D voids. These articles will appear in the July 2018 issue of IISE Transactions (Volume 50, No. 7).
