This month we highlight two articles from IISE Transactions. The first article investigates capacity constraints that accurately model the capacity of parallel machines while avoiding the complexity of the detailed machine assignments in a master production planning problem. The authors developed an exact procedure based on computational geometry and a heuristic that employs graph partitioning, demonstrating the developed methodology in a semiconductor manufacturing system. The second article studies how to decide which critical areas to protect to promote species viability, which reduces the risk of threatened and endangered populations going extinct. The authors proposed models and algorithms that combine elements from landscape ecology, biology and operations research to prescribe areas vital to help species survive. They illustrated their developed methodology with the snail kite, an endangered bird inhabiting the Florida Everglades. These articles will appear in the December 2017 issue of IISE Transactions (Volume 49, No. 12).
