'It's the systems, stupid' — yet sometimes it's stupid systems

Many likely can relate to this headache: Every month, our pest control service's automated system randomly selects a day and time to come by when we are away at work. Thus, these assigned visits always necessitate a phone call to change the appointment, wasting my time and theirs. The customer service representatives are apologetic and promise to try and update the system with our preferences, but the automation seems to be in full control, like the HAL 2000 computer in "2001: A Space Odyssey."
