Discrete event simulation in healthcare

I work for a very large healthcare organization. Recently, one of our system redesign coordinators sent out a systemwide email requesting help in reducing clinic waiting room overcrowding. Among the many expected responses, one coordinator suggested modeling the problem using discrete event simulation (DES). I was surprised at the lack of interest or enthusiasm for her suggestion.
