Brian Mattick

Manufacturing and safety engineer
Werner Co. – Knaack LLC
Crystal Lake, Ill.

Knaack provides job site construction boxes under the Knaack and Rigid brand names and truck and van boxes and shelving under the Weatherguard name to contractors through our distributors.

I am the manufacturing and safety engineer at Werner Co. – Knaack LLC in Crystal Lake, Ill. I provide advanced manufacturing and industrial engineering support through purchasing capital equipment, driving and implementing lean improvements, managing and tracking all cost reduction projects, and providing training and knowledge of proper time study methods. I write processes to support plant safety initiatives and guide supervisors and employees on safe work practices. I also coordinate our new employee orientation and train new presenters.

I use many IE tools on a daily basis, including statistical data analysis, time studies, ergonomics and lean manufacturing techniques like kaizen, 5S and value stream mapping. I have led more than 25 kaizen or lean events.

My perfect day at work would be to come in and see that we are running at more than 100 percent efficiency. Everyone is working safely and watching out for each other, we have no injuries or near misses, all of our equipment is up and running, and employees are implementing lean and safety improvements. I would be working with employees on a kaizen project and helping them to implement their improvement ideas.

We’re looking every day at new ways to improve our manufacturing process to get our products to our customers quicker while maintaining
or improving quality and safety. I get the most satisfaction in my job from watching people I have trained use the tools I have given them to make improvements and watching them become as excited about an improvement or idea as I am.
