Your system of systems

Holistic approach brings stakeholders, engineers together for new technology

BY Craig S. Estridge

Information technology (IT) has the capability to allow companies and organizations to improve efficiencies, dramatically cut costs throughout their operations, and enable organizations to automate decision-making processes. Unfortunately, IT implementations fail to deliver these capabilities or efficiencies, in most cases because the IT infrastructure is fragmented. Moreover, many organizations continue to focus on the technical capabilities of the applications and ignore the importance of process improvement by linking the existing business processes or extended organizational structures to the technology. Furthermore, because professional implementation consultants primarily are experts with the technology, these consultants rely on the clients to provide the business point of view. Therefore, to realize the capabilities of information technology, an enterprise should undertake a system of systems (SoS) approach when implementing IT infrastructure.
