Three Questions with Mandy Long, AI EXPERT

How well do you see healthcare providers adapting AI to their processes?

Healthcare providers are increasingly adopting AI, but the pace of integration varies significantly across organizations. While some are successfully implementing AI for tasks like predictive analytics, many organizations still face challenges with data collection, data integration, model accuracy and regulatory hurdles. Successful adoption will depend on having a framework in place to overcome these barriers, ensuring AI solutions align with clinical workflows and addressing concerns around trust and transparency in decision-making.

What is the next technology breakthrough you see impacting healthcare IT?

I think the next breakthrough in healthcare IT will likely be the widespread adoption of edge computing, allowing AI and data processing to occur closer to where data is created, and as a result, how care is delivered. This capability will result in the opportunity for healthcare providers to make more informed decisions, in real time. Additionally, advances in interoperability capabilities across hardware and software suppliers will drive more seamless integration of disparate healthcare tools and systems, ultimately improving care coordination and patient outcomes.

What do you hope to pass along in your keynote address and also learn from other healthcare professionals at HSPI?

In my keynote, I hope to highlight the importance of tailoring AI to solve real, human-centered problems in healthcare, emphasizing the need for collaboration between technology and healthcare providers. I also look forward to learning from other professionals about their experiences with AI integration and the challenges they face, which can help shape future innovations and better outcomes.
