1. Introduction

The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, Inc. (“IISE,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to the responsible, ethical, and transparent use of artificial intelligence (“AI”) technologies in support of our mission to serve and advance the industrial and systems engineering profession. This Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Use Policy (“Policy”) describes how IISE uses AI tools and technologies in its operations, the principles that guide our use of AI, and the safeguards we have implemented to protect our members, customers, and website visitors.

This Policy applies to AI technologies used by IISE in connection with its website (https://www.iise.org), related digital platforms, content creation, marketing and communications, and organizational operations. This Policy supplements our existing Privacy Policy and Terms of Use, which remain in full effect. In the event of any conflict between this Policy and the Privacy Policy regarding the handling of personal information, the Privacy Policy shall control.

2. Definitions

For the purposes of this Policy, the following definitions apply:

  • “Artificial Intelligence” or “AI” refers to computational systems, including large language models, machine learning algorithms, natural language processing tools, and generative AI platforms, that are designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as content generation, data analysis, pattern recognition, and decision support.
  • “AI-Assisted Content” refers to any written, visual, or multimedia material produced with the support of AI tools and subsequently reviewed, edited, and approved by IISE staff before publication or distribution.
  • “Automated Decision-Making” refers to any process by which a decision is made by technological means without human involvement. IISE does not currently use AI for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on individuals.

3. Guiding Principles

IISE’s use of AI is governed by the following principles:

3.1 Human Oversight and Accountability

AI is a tool that supports—but does not replace—human judgment, expertise, and editorial authority. All AI-generated or AI-assisted outputs used by IISE are subject to review, verification, and approval by qualified staff members before publication, distribution, or use in decision-making. IISE staff remain fully accountable for the content and communications we produce.

3.2 Transparency

We believe our members and stakeholders deserve to understand how AI factors into our work. IISE will disclose its use of AI in contexts where such disclosure is material to the user’s understanding of the content or service being provided. This Policy itself serves as our primary disclosure of AI use practices.

3.3 Accuracy and Quality

IISE is committed to maintaining the accuracy, quality, and professional integrity of all content and communications we produce, regardless of whether AI tools were used in their creation. AI outputs are treated as draft material subject to the same editorial and factual review standards applied to all IISE content.

3.4 Privacy and Data Protection

IISE will not use AI technologies in any manner that compromises the privacy or data protection rights of our members, customers, or website visitors. Our use of AI is subject to the data handling practices described in our Privacy Policy. We do not use member personal information to train, fine-tune, or improve third-party AI models.

3.5 Fairness and Non-Discrimination

IISE is committed to ensuring that its use of AI does not introduce or perpetuate bias, discrimination, or inequitable treatment of any individual or group. We will evaluate AI tools and their outputs for potential bias and take corrective action where bias is identified.

3.6 Intellectual Property

IISE respects intellectual property rights in all aspects of its AI use. We do not use AI tools to knowingly reproduce, replicate, or infringe upon copyrighted material. AI-assisted content produced by IISE is subject to the same intellectual property standards and ownership rights as all other IISE-produced content.

4. How IISE Uses Artificial Intelligence

IISE may use AI tools and technologies in the following areas of its operations:

4.1 Content Creation and Communications

IISE may use AI tools to assist in drafting, editing, and refining marketing copy, email communications, website content, social media posts, and other written materials. All AI-assisted content is reviewed, edited, and approved by IISE staff before publication. AI does not autonomously publish content on behalf of IISE.

4.2 Research and Analysis

IISE may use AI tools to support research, data analysis, trend identification, and the synthesis of information relevant to the industrial and systems engineering profession and our organizational operations.

4.3 Operational Efficiency

IISE may use AI tools to improve internal workflows, including document preparation, data organization, process optimization, and administrative support.

4.4 Member Experience

IISE may explore AI-powered features to enhance the member experience on our digital platforms, such as content personalization, improved search functionality, or interactive tools. Any such features will be deployed with appropriate notice and in compliance with this Policy and our Privacy Policy.

5. Limitations and Restrictions on AI Use

IISE does not and will not use AI technologies to:

  • Make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on members, customers, or other individuals without human review and intervention.
  • Collect, process, or share personal information in a manner inconsistent with our Privacy Policy.
  • Train, fine-tune, or contribute to the development of third-party AI models using member personal information, proprietary content submitted by members (such as conference papers, presentations, or research), or other confidential data, without explicit consent.
  • Replace the professional judgment of industrial and systems engineers or serve as a substitute for professional engineering advice or services.
  • Generate content that is published or distributed without human review and editorial approval.
  • Engage in surveillance, profiling, or monitoring of members or website visitors beyond the analytics practices described in our Privacy Policy.
  • Impersonate individuals or create synthetic representations of real persons.

6. Third-Party AI Tools and Services

IISE may use third-party AI tools and platforms in connection with its operations. When selecting and using third-party AI tools, IISE evaluates such tools for compliance with this Policy, our Privacy Policy, and applicable data protection requirements. IISE does not control the data practices of third-party AI providers and encourages users to review the terms of service and privacy policies of any third-party tools they encounter through IISE platforms.

7. AI-Generated Content Disclaimer

While IISE applies rigorous editorial review to all content, including content created with AI assistance, AI-assisted content may occasionally contain errors, inaccuracies, or omissions. IISE does not guarantee or warrant the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any AI-assisted content. Consistent with our Terms of Use, information published by IISE is provided for general informational purposes and does not constitute engineering advice or engineering services.

8. Member-Submitted Content and AI

IISE recognizes that members and contributors may use AI tools in the preparation of content submitted to IISE, including conference papers, presentations, abstracts, articles, and other professional materials. IISE’s policies regarding the acceptable use of AI in member-submitted content are governed by the submission guidelines applicable to each program, publication, or event. Contributors are responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all content they submit to IISE, regardless of whether AI tools were used in its preparation.

9. AI, Cookies, and Analytics

To the extent that IISE uses AI-powered analytics tools on its website or digital platforms, such use is subject to the cookie and tracking practices described in our Privacy Policy. IISE will not deploy AI-powered analytics that collect personal information beyond the scope of what is described in the Privacy Policy without providing appropriate notice and, where required, obtaining consent.

10. Children’s Privacy and AI

Consistent with our Privacy Policy, IISE’s website and services are not directed to children under the age of 13. IISE does not knowingly use AI technologies to collect, process, or analyze information from or about children under the age of 13.

11. Policy Updates

AI technologies and best practices are evolving rapidly. IISE reserves the right to update, revise, or amend this Policy at any time to reflect changes in our use of AI, developments in AI technology, evolving industry standards, and applicable legal or regulatory requirements. Revisions will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Your continued use of IISE’s website and services after any such changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Policy.
