Modeling & Simulation (M&S) Division BEST TRACK PAPER AWARD

Sponsored by Simio LLC

Purpose and Objectives

The Best Track Paper Award is a part of the Modeling & Simulation Track of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering (IISE) Annual Conference and Expo. The track paper award is intended to recognize the achievements of researchers in the area of M&S.

Application Process

All accepted papers in the M&S track are eligible for this award. The top 20% of submissions, up to 10 papers, will be considered. The top papers are determined based on the combined reviewers score. A single score can be determined by summing all the points across the criteria, by using a weighted average for the criteria, or by any other method that the award committee sees appropriate. A submitted paper is also eligible if it is nominated by a peer reviewer during the normal paper review process, or nominated by the track chair. No paper that has been rejected by the normal review process may be considered for this award.

Evaluation Process

1) An award committee will be formed every year that is chaired by the Director of Awards:
  • The committee should consist of at least three of the Division’s members, e.g., previous award winners or other Board members. The Board should appoint these members.
  • A new committee should be selected each year at the beginning of February.
  • A committee member may not judge his/her paper or his/her student’s paper
2) Each eligible paper must be reviewed by two members of the award committee, each of whom will assign a numerical score using the following five criteria. For each criterion, an integer score between 1 and 5 (1 = min, 5 = max) will be assigned. The paper’s total score is the weighted sum of the five-criterion scores according to the following weighting scheme:
  • Contribution to modeling and simulation research (25%);
  • Significance of the problem (25%);
  • Content is technically correct and substantive (25%);
  • Conclusions are reasonable and supported (12.5%);
  • Organization and quality of exposition (12.5%).
3) All eligible papers are ranked by the sum of the two weighted scores of the committee reviewers so that the maximum possible score is 10. The committee will select the winner(s) based on the final ranking and discussions. The committee chair (Director of Awards) will notify the Division President of the winner.

4) Up to three awards may be given upon recommendation of the committee. The first three papers are selected, i.e., 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

5) The chair of the committee or the Division President will notify the winner(s) and congratulate them on this achievement via email.

6) The Division President will inform the IISE staff of the competition outcome and request that the winner(s) be recognized on the main IISE website. The IISE staff will invite the first place winner to the awards reception that takes place during the IISE Annual Conference and Expo. The winner(s) will also be recognized at the annual Division Town Hall Meeting held in conjunction with the IISE Annual Conference and Exo>
