I just renewed my membership. Why was I placed in the At Large Chapter?

Address or membership status changes can sometimes affect your chapter affiliation. If your preferred mailing address zip code is not included in your chapter service area, chapter affiliation will automatically default back to an At Large chapter. When this happens, IISE will automatically send an email notifying you of the change and the steps to take to correct it if the change is an error.

What if I'm having trouble logging in to the members-only section of the IISE website?

While there are a few reasons why you may have trouble logging in, the most common problems occur because the user is trying to log in from behind a firewall with high security settings. IISE uses "cookies" to verify membership, and high security settings sometimes do not allow this. Check with your network administrator to see if your company allows the use of cookies. If you are not behind a firewall or if your company's security settings allow cookies, you may try adjusting your browser's privacy settings a bit lower. In Internet Explorer, you will find the privacy setting by going to Tools/Internet Options/Privacy. Netscape users go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced and choose to Accept Cookies.

Still having trouble? Try our help page or send us an e-mail describing the problem.

Your renewal notice is important for several reasons. Not only is it used to pay your membership dues, it is also used to communicate a variety of information concerning your membership. Why doesn't IISE have a _________________ division?

Industry- or discipline-specific divisions are organized to help members network and benchmark with others doing work similar to their own, or explore areas of industrial engineering outside those used every day. IISE's Member and Customer Service Department receives many helpful suggestions every day from our members for additional communities not currently represented. Why not start another group? Why does IISE send four membership renewal notices?

Current statistics reveal that 38% of renewal revenue comes from the first notice. The first notice also produces a response rate (total responses divided by total mailed) of more than two times that of notices two through four. Even with lower response rates, revenue generated from notices two through four exceeds the cost of producing and mailing.

There is a fine line that must be balanced between generating the most membership renewals and sensitivity to the membership's comfort level of direct mail. This renewal strategy is pursued for the long-term growth and health of the Institute, as it is through this growth that IISE will be able to provide the level of service and benefits that all members expect and deserve.

IISE will continue to analyze the membership renewal process and be sensitive to our members' thoughts and ideas.

Why have I been charged twice for my membership dues?

The IISE customer service department receives membership renewal payment notices in several different ways. Many members choose to renew by mailing a check or credit card number with their notice directly to IISE headquarters. Others choose to send payment to the IISE Post Office Box in Atlanta, which is received by First Union Bank and details are forwarded to IISE. Some members call the customer service department and give a credit card number over the telephone to a customer service representative, while others fax their notices.

Any of the payment options are equally acceptable methods. Double charges occur most frequently when members fax their renewal notice with their credit information in addition to mailing the original. Once the customer service department receives the fax, the form is placed in the queue to be charged and processed.
Days later when the mailed form is received, it is placed in a another queue to be processed. Approximately 200 renewals are received and processed per day with the payment source provided. To avoid duplicate billings, please remit your form by using one payment option only.

Why have I been placed in a Members At Large Chapter?

During 1999/2000, when IISE was taking a look at its path forward and determining how we could best meet the needs of our members, each operating Board was asked to examine its area and present possible solutions to recognized problems. A problem that both the Chapter Operations Board and IISE Headquarters had known for quite awhile was the problem of chapters whose boundaries included such an enormous amount of territory that it was completely impossible for members to be involved in chapter meetings and events. Several solution proposals surfaced from this examination process and were presented to the local chapters for their input. Based on this feedback, the decision was made to establish new, realistic boundaries designed to really meet the needs of the members based on zip codes. Basically, IISE ended the practice of assigning every member to a local chapter even when the chapter was inactive or "local" means traveling 150 miles to a meeting. Geographically remote members now have an At-Large Chapter that will serve its members using the Internet via email and an IISE supported website.

If you have been placed in an At Large chapter, it is because the zip code area in which you live or work was not provided to IISE as an area served by a geographical chapter. Any member, who does not wish to remain in an At Large chapter, should contact IISE Member and Customer Service, 800-494-0461, 102, to facilitate changing to the chapter of your choice.
