REDUCING FLAME. A gas flame having a reducing effect. (Excess fuel gas.)
REGULATOR. A device for controlling the delivery of gas at some substantially constant pressure regardless of variation in the higher pressure at the source.
RESISTANCE BRAZING. A brazing process in which the heat required is obtained from the resistance to electric current in a circuit of which the work is a part.
RESISTANCE SEAM-WELDING. A resistance-welding process wherein coalescence at the faying surfaces is produced by the heat obtained from resistance to electric current through the work parts held together under pressure by electrodes. The resulting weld is a series of overlapping resistance-spot welds made progressively along a joint by rotating the electrodes.
RESISTANCE SPOT-WELDING. A resistance-welding process wherein coalescence at the faying surfaces is produced in one spot by the heat obtained from the resistance to electric current through the work parts held together under pressure by electrodes. The size and shape of the individually-formed welds are limited primarily by the size and contour of the electrodes.
REVERSE POLARITY. The arrangement of direct current arc-welding leads wherein the work is the negative pole and the electrode is the positive pole of the welding arc.
ROOT CRACK. A crack in the weld or heat-affected zone occurring at the root of a weld.
ROOT FACE. That portion of the groove face adjacent to the root of the joint.
ROOT OPENING. The separation between the members to be joined, at the root of the joint.
