INSERTS. Cutting tools made of carbide or ceramics are manufactured in the form of inserts which are usually mechanically held in the tool or cutter. They are available in a large variety of materials and shapes and are also called indexable inserts or throw-away inserts. They have multiple cutting edges and generally are not reground.

INTERFERENCE FIT. A fit between mating parts having limits of size so prescribed that an interference always results in assembly.

INTERNAL BROACHING. The production of internal surfaces other than the origination of holes by employing a tool of increasing size teeth that is actuated by pulling or pushing.
