RATE CONTROL. Control system in which the input is the desired velocity of the controlled object.
RATIONALIZE.To simplify and organize to allow further use and analysis, as in putting parts into a family based on group technology principles.
REAL TIME. Pertaining to computation performed while the related physical process is taking place so that results of the computation can be used in guiding the physical process, without the process response dynamics being changed.
RECORD-PLAYBACK ROBOT. A manipulator for which the critical points and desired trajectories are stored in sequence by recording the actual values of the joint position encoders of the robot as it is moved under operator control. To perform the task, these points are played back to the robot servo system.
REDUNDANCY. Duplication of information or devices in order to improve reliability.
REGISTER. A computer or other electronic storage area set aside to hold a particular quantity, such as motor registers used to keep a running account of arm motion.
RELATIVE. A coordinate system in which each location is defined by its incremental distance from a previous position.
RELIABILITY. (1) The likelihood that a machine will be operable, specified as a percent or as a time until breakdown. (2) The probability that a device will function without failure over a specified time period or amount of usage.
REMOTE CENTER COMPLIANCE (RCC). A compliant device used to interface a robot or other mechanical workhead to its tool or working medium. The RCC allows a gripped part to rotate about its tip or to translate without rotating when pushed laterally at its tip. The RCC thus provides general lateral and rotational float and greatly eases robot or other mechanical assembly in the presence of errors in parts.
REPEATABILITY. In robotics, the error involved when a robot is taught a point and then is commanded to return to that point.
RESOLUTION. ( 1 ) The least interval between two adjacent discrete details that can be distinguished from one another. (2) The smallest increment of distance that can be read and acted upon by an automatic control system. (3) In computer science, a theorem-proving method based on match and substitution.
REWORK. The process of remedying an incorrectly manufactured part, sub-assembly or assembly by reprocessing it either in the normal manufacturing system or in a dedicated facility.
ROBOT. (1) An automatic apparatus or device that performs functions ordinarily ascribed to human beings or operates with what appears to be almost human intelligence. (2) A mechanical device that accomplishes what may be thought of as human motions under computer control; an arm with a brain. (3) A reprogrammable multi-functional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks.
ROLL. The angular displacement around the principal axis of a body, especially its line of motion.
ROUTING. (1) In production, the sequence of operations to be performed in order to produce a part or an assembly. (2) In telecommunications, the assignment of the communications path by which a message can reach its destination.
ROUTING SHEET. A document which lists the sequence of moves between operations or machines, used to control the movement of material in a job shop.
RUNG. A grouping of PC instructions which controls one output. This is represented as one section of a logic ladder diagram.
RUN TIME. The standard time allowed for the processing of one piece of a specific item for a specified machine and operation.
