RANDOM STORAGE POLICY. A storage policy in which an incoming item is stored in any available location.
RATED LOAD (CRANE). The maximum load the equipment is designed to handle safely.
REACH TRUCK. A self-loading truck, generally high lift, having load-engaging means mounted so it can be extended forwardly under control to permit a load to be picked up and deposited in the extended position and transported in the retracted position.
RECEIVING. The function of accepting, recording, and reporting merchandise into a facility.
RECEIVING AREA. The space reserved for the receiving function.
RECIPROCATING BEAM CONVEYOR. One or more parallel reciprocating beams with tilting dogs or pushers arranged to progressively advance objects.
REMOVABLE POSTS (PORTABLE METAL STACKING RACKS). A load-carrying column that is inserted at each corner of the base by a simple mechanical means. A nesting target or plug is permanently affixed to the top of the column.
REPLENISHMENT. Re-stocking primary picking locations from reserve storage locations.
RESISTORS, BALLAST (CRANE OR CARRIER). Electrical resistance added in the motor circuit to provide reduced starting current for gradual acceleration.
RESTRICTED ARTICLES (AIR TRANSPORT). Certain articles (explosives, for example) which are either excluded from air cargo entirely or subject to stringent requirements on volume and packaging. A restricted articles tariff, giving full details on such articles, is published by Air Tariff Publishers, Inc. for the airlines.
RETARDER. Any device used to slow the rate of travel of bulk material or objects on a conveyor.
RETARDING CONVEYOR. Any conveyor used to retard the rate of movement of bulk materials, packages or objects where the slope is such that the conveyed material tends to propel the conveying medium.
REUSABLE CONTAINER. A container intended for multiple cycles of use.
REWAREHOUSING. Rearrangement of supplies from one storage area to another within the same storage activity.
RIBBON BELT CONVEYOR. (See BELT CONVEYOR, MULTIPLE RIBBON.)
RIBBON CONVEYOR. (See RIBBON FLIGHT SCREW CONVEYOR.)
RIBBON CONVEYOR, INTERNAL. (See INTERNAL RIBBON CONVEYOR.)
RIBBON FLIGHT. A conveyor screw flight proportioned to provide a space between it and the internal supporting pipe or shaft when mounted thereon.
RIBBON FLIGHT CONVEYOR SCREW. A conveyor screw in which the conveyor screw flight is of the ribbon flight type.
RIBBON FLIGHT SCREW CONVEYOR. A screw conveyor having a ribbon flight screw. (See SCREW CONVEYOR.)
RIDER TRUCK. A truck that is designed to be controlled by an operator from either a standing or sitting position.
RIGHT ANGLE STACK AISLE WIDTH. The aisle width necessary to place in location the maximum dimension load perpendicular to the aisle with a given vehicle.
RIGID BACK-TO-BACK TIE. A member connecting back-to-back racks, maintaining a constant space and adding rigidity to the complete assembly.
RIGID CONTAINER. A container with components permanently assembled.
RIGID POST (PORTABLE METAL STACKING RACK). A load-carrying column permanently attached to the corner of the base. A nesting target or plug is permanently affixed to the top of the column.
ROLLER CONVEYOR. A series of rollers supported in a frame over which objects are advanced manually, by gravity, or by power.
ROLLER CONVEYOR, HERRINGBONE. A roller conveyor consisting of two parallel series of rollers having one or both series skewed.
ROLLER CONVEYOR, HYDROSTATIC. A section of roller conveyor having rollers suitably weighted with liquid to control the velocity of objects being conveyed.
ROLLER CONVEYOR, LIVE. A series of rollers over which objects are moved by the application of power to all or some of the rollers. The transmitting medium is usually belting or chain.
ROLLER CONVEYOR, SHOCK ABSORBING. (See ROLLER CONVEYOR, SPRING MOUNTED.)
ROLLER CONVEYOR, SKEWED. A roller conveyor having a series of rollers skewed to direct objects laterally while being conveyed.
ROLLER CONVEYOR, SPEED-UP. A powered roller conveyor operating at a higher speed than its feeder to create space between unit loads.
ROLLER CONVEYOR, SPOOL TYPE. A roller conveyor in which the rollers are of conical or tapered shape with diameter at ends of roller larger than at the center.
ROLLER CONVEYOR, SPRING MOUNTED. (1) A roller conveyor where the ends of each roller are supported on springs. (2) A section of roller conveyor supported on springs.
ROLLER CONVEYOR, TROUGHED. A roller conveyor having two rows of rollers set at an angle to form a trough over which objects are conveyed.
