ICC TYPE LP GAS CYLINDER. A fuel container for liquefied petroleum gas made and inspected under Interstate Commerce Commission regulations. When used for storage of an industrial truck’s fuel supply, it may be permanently or removably affixed to the vehicle.

ICHCA. International Cargo Handling Coordination Association.

IDLER SHEAVE. A sheave used to equalize tension in opposite parts of a rope.

IMBALANCED LOAD, CAROUSEL. The maximum load difference tolerated in a carousel, as measured between the two parallel sides, under which the carousel can continue to operate within its normal duty cycle.

IMPACT FACTOR. An allowance for additional load resulting from the dynamic effect of the live load.

IN BOND CARGO. Cargo that moves under the carrier’s bond from the gateway city until released by customs at an inland point.

INCLINED RECIPROCATING CONVEYOR. A reciprocating power- or gravity-actuated unit that receives only inanimate objects on a track, roller conveyor or other form of carrying surface not designed to carry passengers or the operator. These units operate on inclines of less than 90° to the horizontal and usually at less than 45°. This type of conveyor is never designed to carry an operator or passengers and no person may be permitted to ride on it. No controls for movement of the carrier may be located on the carrier nor within reach of any person who might be standing on the carrier. For carriers operating on steeper than stairway slopes further safeguards are necessary and the construction should follow the provisions given for vertical reciprocating conveyors. (See VERTICAL RECIPROCATING CONVEYOR.)

INDEXING. Controlled spacing or feeding.

INDUSTRIAL TOW TRACTOR. A powered industrial truck designed primarily to draw one or more non-powered trucks, trailers or other mobile loads.

INDUSTRIAL TRUCK. A wheeled vehicle, primarily for the movement of objects or materials, and usually associated with manufacturing, processing, or warehousing, but not including vehicles intended primarily for earth-moving or over-the-road hauling.

INPUT AND OUTPUT (I/O) POINT (See PICK-UP AND DELIVERY STATION ).

INTERCHARACTER GAP. The space between two adjacent bar code characters.

INTERLEAVED BAR CODE. A bar code in which characters are paired together using bars to represent the first character and spaces to represent the second.

INTERLINE. The movement of a shipment via two or more carriers.

INTERLOCKING MECHANISM. A mechanical device to lock together the adjacent ends of two cranes or a crane and spur truck to permit the transfer of carriers from one crane or track to the other.

INTERLOCKS, ELECTRICAL. Electrical devices in the starter circuit that prevent a short circuit when opposite controls are operated at the same time.

INTERLOCKS, MECHANICAL. Mechanical devices that prevent operation of opposite controls at the same time.

INTERMEDIATE PACKAGE. An interior container that contains two or more unit packages of identical items.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE TRUCK. A truck in which the power source is a gasoline, LP gas, or diesel engine.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION TRACTOR. An industrial tractor in which the power source is gasoline, LP gas, or diesel engine.

INTERNAL DISCHARGE BUCKET ELEVATOR. A bucket elevator having continuous buckets abutting hinged, or overlapped and designed for loading and discharging along the inner boundary of the closed path of the buckets. (See BUCKET ELEVATOR.)

INTERNAL RIBBON CONVEYOR. A trunnion-supported revolving cylinder the inner surface of which is fitted with continuous or interrupted ribbon fighting.

INVENTORY. (1) The material maintained in a facility for further processing and/or sale and shipment to a customer. (2) The physical count of items of stock, raw material, work-in-process, or finished goods located within a depot, warehouse, plant, or other storage or warehousing activity.

INVERTED POWER AND FREE CONVEYOR. A Power-and-Free Conveyor in which the two conveyor lines - powered and free - are at ground level and the loads are above the conveyor lines.

ITEM-TO-PERSON AS/RS. An AS/RS in which the items come from their storage locations to the end of an aisle where an operator or a transportation mechanism sends the items to their point of use.
