EBCDIC (See EXTENDED BINARY-CODED DECIMAL INTERCHANGE CODE.)

EDIT. (ANSI/ISO) To prepare data for a later operation. Editing may include the following: the rearrangement or the addition of data; the deletion of unwanted data; format control; code conversion; and the application of standard processes such as zero suppression.

EDITOR PROGRAM. (ANSI) A computer program designed to perform such functions as the rearrangement, modification, and deletion of data in accordance with prescribed rules.

ELECTRONIC DATA INTERCHANGE (EDI). EDI is the electronic transfer of business information from one independent computer system to another, using agreed-upon standards for terms and formats of documents. The most common application of this method is the translation of a purchase order on a customer's system into a sales order on a vendor's system. However, many other types of transactions are possible including notification of shipment, invoicing, cash transfers, etc. Standards have normally been adapted by industry segments and this has inhibited some advancement in use of this tool. The success of

EDI relies on rethinking business processes, not speeding up old bureaucratic procedures. The two key standards are X.12 and EDIFACT.

ELECTRONIC MAIL. (1) (ANSI) The use of a computer to transmit correspondence between workstations. (2) This facility of communication can be provided via a single computer system, an owned network, or a more public value-added network. The principle is to send messages, not to a place as in a telephone, but to particular people. Messages sent are placed in a repository until the receiving party picks them up. Sending and receiving can conceivable be done from any location with the proper equipment and data communication capability. Recent definition of a standard, X.400, has aided the implementation of this tool in business.

ELECTROSTATIC PLOTTER. (ANSI/ISO) A raster plotter that uses a row of electrodes to fix the ink electrostatically on the paper.

ENCODE. (1) (ANSI/ISO) To convert data by the use of a code or a coded character set in such a manner that reconversion to the original form is possible. Encode is sometimes loosely used when complete reconversion is not possible.

EQUIVALENCE OPERATION. (1) (ANSI/ISO) The dyadic Boolean operation whose result has the Boolean value 1 if and only if the operands have the same Boolean value. Syn: if-and-only-if operation.

ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ-ONLY MEMORY (EPROM). (ANSI/ISO) A programmable read-only memory that can be erased by a special process and re-used. Syn: reprogrammable read-only memory.

EXECUTE. (ANSI/ISO) To perform the actions specified by a program or portion of a program.

EXIT. (1) (ANSI/ISO) To execute an instruction or statement within a portion of a program in order to terminate the execution of that portion. Such portions may include loops, routines, subroutines, modules. (2) (ANSI/ISO) Any instruction in a computer program, in a routine, or in a subroutine after the execution of which control is no longer exercised by that computer program, that routine, or that subroutine.

EXPERT SYSTEM. (ANSI) In artificial intelligence, a functional unit for solving problems in a particular field of knowledge by drawing inferences from a knowledge base acquired through human experience. Syn: Knowledge-based system.

EXTENDED BINARY-CODED DECIMAL INTERCHANGE CODE (EBCDIC). (ANSI) A coded character set consisting of 8-bit coded characters.
