The interactive panel discussion with 4 panelists.

  • Describe 3 Lean tools used in the integrated design and construction model
  • Identify 3 methods for capturing the voice of the customer in the building design and construction process
  • Define 3 Lean concepts used in constructing healthcare buildings

A team of over 30 firms tested a new model of integrated design and construction in the development of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital’s building expansion. Representing this process, a panel of speakers with representation from the owner, program manager, architect and construction contractor will discuss the building expansion and its integrative approach to hospital infrastructure expansion.

After introducing the project and goals, the panel will describe the integrated design and construction model. Specific how-to tips on executing this model will include Lean tools: collaboration, component teams, the big room, guiding principles, target value design, technology, prototyping, pull planning, A3 decision making, cost estimation, scorecard, and experience workshops and experience mapping.

The panel will discuss specific methods, benchmarks, successes, failures and key learnings candidly as they walk through the several month-long process. Specifically, the panel will expand upon:

  • Integrated Design & Construction Team: Design Process, Communications & Technology, Construction Coordination
  • Patient Experience Design Outreach: Literature, Workshops, Prototyping, & Digital Surveying
  • Community and Staff Involvement and Engagement: Outreach Meetings and Media
  • Construction planning and logistics, including Lean tools used in construction
  • The panel will then share results of this model, including lessons learned

Time will be reserved at the end for questions.
