Executive summaries of IIE Transactions and The Engineering Economist

Edited by Ronald Askin and Thomas O. Boucher

This month we highlight a pair of articles that describe application of mathematical modeling to very different service systems in government and business. The first article models traffic congestion during an emergency evacuation and develops plans that can provide more reliable results. The second article studies how large retail chains should mark down items with time-sensitive demand as the products near the end of their life cycle. These articles will appear in the January 2015 issue of IIE Transactions (Volume 47, No. 1).
