Student Activities

Choose from a wide variety of sessions that are relative to your specific areas of interest. Sessions will include opportunities for students to interact with peers and with practicing professionals. The annual conference also offers evening socials and a networking mixer organized by student host chapters. Business casual attire is required.

Construction Division Student Paper Competition

This student competition is for papers and projects demonstrating or describing the use of industrial engineering tools in a construction environment. The papers should demonstrate or describe the use of techniques such as lean methods, quality management, green technology, simulation, optimization, automation and alternative materials. Open to graduate and undergraduate students.

Data Analytics & Information Systems (DAIS) Division Student Paper Competition

The DAIS division solicits applications for the DAIS Best Student Paper Competition at the IISE Annual Conference & Expo. In order to be qualified for the award, the students must submit a paper (invited or contributed) for the conference using the usual submission process, fill out an application and present their work at the conference. Lean Division Student Paper Competition

The competition recognizes outstanding papers in the field of lean research and practices written by a graduate or an undergraduate student. Papers should demonstrate or describe the use of techniques such as simulation, lean principle implementation, alternative designs, kaizen implementation, etc. The winner will have the opportunity to present the paper in track session. The award will be given in the lean track.

Operations Research (OR) Division Undergraduate Student Research Dissemination Competition

This award recognizes scholarly work as well as ability to communicate results effectively from an undergraduate student or student teams. This award will encourage more participation from undergraduates in research and in division-level activities. Furthermore, since the award includes a presentation to decide the winner, students are encouraged to improve both their written and technical presentation skills. Engagement will encourage student members to become regular members beyond graduation.

Quality Control and Reliability Engineering (QCRE) Student Paper Competition

The purpose of this competition is to honor outstanding papers in the field of quality and/or reliability engineering research and practice. The winner must be able to present the paper in the QCRE track at the IISE Annual Conference & Expo. The award will be presented at the QCRE Town Hall meeting during ISERC and be acknowledged in the QCRE Newsletter and in the Honors & Awards program. Candidate papers will come from those submitted to the QCRE track and accepted through the regular submission process. This competition is open to both graduate and undergraduate students.

Society for Engineering and Management Systems (SEMS) Student Paper Competition

The Society for Engineering and Management Systems (SEMS) papers should demonstrate or describe the use of techniques that improve productivity and quality through effective and economical managerial techniques and philosophies. Both undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit papers. The winners must present their papers in the Engineering Management Track at the IISE Annual Conference & Expo.

IISE/Arena Student Simulation Competition

Sponsored by Rockwell Automation
Teams of three IE undergraduate students solve a real-world situational case study using the Rockwell Automation simulation package, Arena. Student team members and their faculty advisor are not required to be members of IISE to enter, but they will become members if they are one of the three teams selected to compete at the finals courtesy of Rockwell. Three finalists must be able to attend the IISE Annual Conference & Expo and present their solutions.

IISE Innovative Design Competition

The IISE Innovative Design Competition was launched at the conference in 2016 and was a great success.  This year, we hope to further expand participation in the event.  Multi-university teams will be formed at the conference to design a new product and to present their 5-minute concept pitches in front of a live audience and a judging panel of industry professionals.  It is encouraged but not required that all team members attend the team presentation (at least one team member must attend and present).  However, to participate, each team member must be available to attend the entire team working session on Monday.  If you have any questions about the competition, please contact Dawn Strickland (dawn.strickland@gatech.edu), vice president of student development at IISE.

Undergraduate Student Technical Paper Competition

Sponsored by John Deere
The competition recognizes excellence in technical writing at the undergraduate level. First place winners from previous regional conferences will move on to participate in this competition. The finalists must be able to attend the IISE Annual Conference & Expo to give oral presentations in front of their peers and professional IEs.
